Recent pub in the Silva Lab looking at drought in east Texas

Lagged mortality among tree species four years after an exceptional drought in east Texas

The research looked at tree mortality following an exceptional drought in Texas that occurred in 2011. We compared estimates between two surveys, a rapid damage assessment (RDA) conducted in 2012, with estimates from Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA). We found that population estimates of standing dead trees were not significantly different between the two surveys. We then used FIA data to examine plot-level drought-driven and pest-driven mortality 2012-2015.

This work involved researchers from Texas A&M University, University of Florida, and University of Minnesota. The lead author, Paul Klockow, is a graduate of our program (MS with Tony D'Amato).
